Other early critics included the eminent Polynesian scholar SirPeter Buck who referred to "that Kon-Tiki raft business"as "a nice adventure. But you don’t expect anyone tocall that a scientific expedition. Now do you?" ( Evensberget1994:102-103; Jacoby 1968:198).Finnish anthropologist Rafael Karsten, intimated that the expeditionhad been a hoax including the claim that the raft had been "speciallyconstructed-among other things, built in such a way that it couldoverturn and right itself." There were further insinuationsof deceit with such comments as: "In general, it may be saidthat if half of what has been told about the expedition is true, then it must be regarded as a miracle that the travelers got throughit at all. But, as we know, miracles occur rather seldomly".(Evensberget 1994:103-104; Jacoby 1968:201-203).
