#1 ECONOMICS Most people are familiar with the famous discussion of the Trolley Problem, which was popularized by philosopher Philippa Foot. As is often found in philosophy, this thought-experiment has many variations that are worth exploring. This paper will discuss two trolley problems that are commonly used to test economic theory. One example is called "Bob's Best Burger" and the other is "The Drowning Child". These examples use the same basic concept, yet produce different results. The trolley problems consistently produce different reactions among economists which is intriguing to most people who are exposed to them. This paper will discuss the potential underlying factors that result in the differing conclusions of the economists, and what these differences may say about ethical behavior. #2 EC-202 THINK TANK PAPERS The most famous “think tank” is perhaps RAND Corporation. RAND Corporation was founded in 1946 with support from the US Air Force, with the mandate to provide research and analysis independently of US military requirements (and political influence). It is particularly notable for being very open about its work, publishing what it calls “eyes-only” documents. RAND Corporation publishes frequently asked questions on the Internet, and many of these are of immediate interest to economics students. For example, RAND’s report on "The Digital Divide" is already dated, but presents a very insightful perspective on the state of technology in 2005. It also publishes interesting papers more generally on its website, including some more recently on health care reform in the United States. The RAND think tank studies are not available online, but it is possible to request paper access to them by visiting RAND’s website. #3 STUDENT PAPERS Quality papers are always in demand, whether it is an essay, term paper, research paper, homework assignment or a thesis. Students are often looking for ideas to write about for their assignments - either because they have not been given enough stimulus to write about or they do not feel that the topic that they have been given is in depth enough. The following student papers in economics are not in depth enough to be considered academic research papers, but they are well written and provide some interesting insights into the world of economics. "This essay looks at a couple of points from different angles in order to assess how big a threat competition from China is to Australia’s economic prosperity. In the first part, I look at what steps countries can take to keep their economies competitive in relation to trading with China.
